The goal of SOPHIS is development of the next generation ICT systems focused on solution of tasks crucial for Latvian society and contributing to the economy transformation to products and services with high added value. SOPHIS covers all 11 defined tasks for the program, as well as two additional tasks resulting from the scientific and economic urgency. SOPHIS is organized in four projects:
- „Development of technologies for cyber physical systems with applications in medicine and smart transport”;
- „Ontology-based knowledge engineering technologies suitable for web environment”;
- “BIOPHOTONICS: imaging, diagnostics and monitoring”;
- “Development of technologies for secure and reliable smart-city”.
The program offered by SOPHIS, like Horizon 2020, is built around three pillars:
- high-level research – programs partners in 2013 international assessment of research institutions have gained high rating, as well as take into account recommendation given in the final report of the Computer Science and Engineering panel “The IECS is a reference model for national collaborations and can increase its potential by leading a consolidation effort with other Latvian research units’ experts in similar field”.
- technology transfer and development of innovation – the program is focused to close collaboration with partners from the economic sector, as evidenced by four industry associations and partners supporting letters, as well as focused to approbation of research results and technology transfer to provide the contribution for the economic transformation to the high-added-value products and services.
- solving social challenges – the program provides interdisciplinary nature of future ICT systems demonstrating the potential applications in health, transport, city and society security problems.
